The correct silicone sealant can be an easier decision to make then you would have thought. While any trip to the local hardware store will be filled aisles of different kinds of caulk there are certain things to keep in mind.

When choosing caulking your aim is to create a wall keeping water and air at bay. Once this caulk is laid down correctly the seal will last for years. It can be difficult to find the right caulk if you allow it to be. Do not allow all of the different brand names and fancy labels get in the way.

Identify where you need to use the caulk. Bathrooms, kitchens, outdoors and other areas will all provide different challenges and there are caulks for each. When it comes to the kitchen and bathroom sinks you need to choose a caulk that is resistant to mildew. Generally speaking these silicone based caulks will be mold and mildew resistant so you have no worries in that area.

There will be many choices when it comes to colors to choose from as well. These color choices are meant to match the surrounding area where the caulk will be applied. Now these caulks can be bought to not only match colors but textures as well to make them almost invisible upon drying.

When you are working with glass, tile and metal this a silicone based caulk works best. Do not use this kind of product on wood since it is difficult for it to adhere properly to wood. You should remember that this kind of caulk can be difficult to work with especially if you have little experience with it. You must remove any existing caulk before placing down a new bead. This kind of caulking does not adhere well to existing caulks.

A silicone sealant is the perfect way to keep water and air at bay. Choosing can be confusing but pick the caulk you need for the job your working on. This caulking can be applied to almost any surface except for wood. In order to get a good seal remove any old caulking first.
